WICHITA, KS – For the first time since the Wichita Wind were affiliated with the Edmonton Oilers from 1980-83, Wichita will have affiliated hockey.
Late Saturday afternoon, a tweet from Murray Pam of The Hockey News surfaced quoting Ottawa Senators assistant general manager Randy Lee who said the Senators ECHL affiliate would be the Thunder. Pam asked Lee about an ECHL affiliation during a Senators’ town hall meeting during the team’s prospect camp.
The Thunder has not confirmed the report. An ECHL rule exists which prohibits member teams from commenting on such matters until the NHL club announces the move first.
Last season, the Senators were affiliated with the Evansville IceMen. The Senators have an AHL affiliate in Binghamton, NY.
It is possible an announcement between the Senators and Thunder could be announced next week, but it is not known whether there will be a formal press conference.
