After sub-par efforts the last two seasons that saw the team miss the playoffs in the CHL and ECHL, head coach Kevin McClelland continued to re-tool his team on Wednesday.
The emphasis in the signings this season has been on defense, and that is true in the latest round of signings announced by the team. The team announced defenseman Dalton Reum will be back for another season and added Jannik Christensen.
Reum was acquired by the Thunder on October 24, 2014 and appeared in 26 games before having his season cut short by a knee injury he suffered while playing the Mallards in January. Reum tallied 46 penalty minutes and was a minus 7 on the Thunder blueline. Prior to coming to Wichita, the native of Camrose, Alberta appeared in 52 contests, collected eight assists and 76 penalty minutes during his rookie campaign with the Idaho Steelheads.
Coming to Wichita is former Quad City Mallards defenseman Jannik Christensen. In his first season playing pro hockey in North America, Christensen appeared in 62 games, tallied 14 points (1G, 13A) and was a minus 10. Before coming over, Christensen played in Denmark for Esbjerg EfB Ishockey for three seasons. There, he collected 29 points in 116 games.
With the addition of today’s signings, that brings the number of players announced to the training camp roster to 15. Camp opens at the Wichita Ice Center early next month.
