WICHITA, KS – The Wichita Thunder moved back to the forward position for their latest signing announcement.
Joining the team for 2017-18 is second-year player Matthew Tipoff.
“Matt came highly recommended by his former teammates and coaches that I know well,” said Head Coach Malcolm Cameron. “He is a skilled playmaker, has good vision and patience with the puck. We’re excited to have him join us this season.”
The 26-year-old forward from Toronto, Ontario played the 2016-17 season with the Edinburgh Capitals of the Elite Ice Hockey League in Britain. There, he scored 11 goals and added 21 assists (32 points) in 47 games. Also, he collected five points in 10 games in the EIHL Cup tournament. Before going pro, Tipoff played five years at St. Mary’s University in Canada. There, he was teammates with fellow Thunder teammate Jamie Doornbosch and Gerrad Grant. In 120 games, where he scored 33 goals and added 83 assists (116 points.)
Tipoff also had a solid junior hockey career, playing 316 games in the Ontario Hockey League and tallying 65 goals and 115 assists (180 points.) Tipoff also played with NHL player Gabriel Landeskog in 2010-11, finishing with a career-high 60 points (25G, 35A) in 66 games.
“I’m very excited to have signed in Wichita and to be coming back to North American hockey,” commented Tipoff. “I’ve never played for a team in the states, and have heard good things about the city and organization. Malcolm and I don’t know each other yet, but do have some connection through our hockey past in Atlantic Canada. I’m looking forward to working with him and bringing the best out of my game this year. My training this summer has been going great. I’ve started to ramp it up and have been skating a lot more with only a few months left.”
The addition of Tipoff brings the number of announced player signings by the Thunder to 12, third most behind the Fort Wayne Komets (14) and South Carolina Stingrays who have announced 15 player signings.
