Washington Selects Four in Day Two of NHL Draft

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The 2020 NHL Entry Draft is in the books, and the Washington Capitals walked away with five player selections after moving up two spots in the first round to select Hendrix Lapierre 22nd overall. The Caps waited a while before making a selection on Wednesday, as the deal saw their next pick come with the 117th overall selection.

The Capitals used the 117th overall pick to select Russian winger Bogdan Trineyev. Trineyev, a 6’3, 198-pound skater, had 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists) in 36 games with Dynamo Moscow 2 in the Russian junior league in the 2019-20 season. He has been described as a power forward similar to Philadelphia Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk.

Later, Washington used the 148th overall selection to draft a player whose name is sure to be a hit in Hershey. Bear Hughes had 47 points (16 goals, 31 assists) in 61 games with the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL and ranked sixth on the team in points as a rookie. The 6’1, 165-pound center finished with a plus-nine rating in 61 games played in 2019-20. He’s described as a strong forward who is adept at keeping the puck and is an asset on the forecheck.

The Capitals used their 179th pick in the draft to select goaltender Garin Bjorklund. The 6’2, 173-pound netminder played in 28 games for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL, recording a 2.91 goals against average and a 0.897 save percentage in his first full season in the league. He is described as a confident, agile goaltender who should demonstrate rapid improvement and development over the next couple seasons.

Not content to end there, the Capitals made a late move in the draft to acquire the 211th overall pick in this year’s draft from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for their seventh round selection in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.

With the acquired pick, Washington drafted Oskar Magnusson, a 5’10, 166-pound Swedish winger who had 22 goals and 26 assists in 38 games played with the Malmo Redhawks J20 team last season. So far in the 2020-21 season, Magnusson has four assists in five games with the J20 team, as well as three games played with the SHL’s Malmo Redhawks. Hershey has a history of great picks in the seventh round, including Christian Djoos and Tyler Lewington. Magnusson is described as an energetic player who uses his abilities to capitalize on tempo swings, taking the puck to high traffic areas on the way.
