It’s early in the ECHL season, but one of the things that I’ve been working on throughout the last couple of years is trying to find some ways to figure out advanced stats in the minor leagues of hockey. With sites like war-on-ice and Extra Skater a year or so ago, and many, many great minds covering advanced stats in the NHL, there’s not a lot of information for leagues like the AHL and ECHL.

One thing I’ve been working on is Estimated Time-On-Ice (eTOI). Using a formula involving goal events, I’ve been able to get a estimation on TOI for players. The key word I stress however, is estimated. Early in the season, the small sample size can greatly over-estimate or under-estimate a players eTOI. The main thing I like to use these numbers for however, is that you can get a good idea of what players are being used where and how often.

And now, here are the Tulsa Oilers eTOI through seven games.

Forwards:

Brandon Wong – 25:00
Jordan Kremyr – 25:00
Dan DeSalvo – 23:12
Adam Pleskach – 21:26
Brady Ramsay – 21:26
Phil Brewer – 19:33
Brian Nugent – 16:04
Ben Walker – 16:04
Darian Dziurzynski – 14:02
Mathieu Gagnon – 5:21

Defense:

Matt Konan – 33:56
Dennis Brown – 32:24
Brennan Serville – 19:38
Tom Kroshus – 18:15
Nathan Lutz – 14:17
Connor Kucera – 13:15
Joe Sova – 10:42

More updates will be posted as the season moves on. In the meantime, the Oilers begin a two-game set against the Colorado Eagles tonight with an 8:05 Central Time start. The Oilers will be without the services of Brennan Serville as he was called up to the Manitoba Moose earlier today and joining Ben Walker who was called up earlier this week.
