ALBANY, NY – The Springfield Thunderbirds will conclude their home and home series tonight when they take on the Albany Devils at Times Union Center in Albany, NY. The Thunderbirds lost to the Devils in overtime 3-2 on Wednesday night at the MassMutual Center. With the shootout loss for the Thunderbirds on Wednesday night, the record for the Thunderbirds is 4-7 with a game they has gone passed regulation.
The Thunderbirds have only won two of their last nine games that have gone into overtime or a shootout.
Thunderbirds goaltender Mike McKenna made 34 saves in the game, including 17 in the third period. It was McKenna’s first loss in three starts. Albany Devils rookie goaltender Ken Appleby took the victory with making 33 saves. The two team combined for 72 shots in Wednesday night’s affair.
Thunderbirds defenseman MacKenzie Weegar sent the game into overtime on Wednesday night putting it past Devils goaltender Ken Appleby with 1:40 left to go in regulation. It was Weegar’s team-leading ninth goal of the 2016-17 campaign.
Ben Sexton came away with the game-winning goal for the Devils with 1:40 left in overtime.
As we near the season’s midway point, the Thunderbirds enter the game 10 points behind the Hershey Bears for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division. There will be plenty of hockey to be played during these next few months, as the regular season will not end until April.
The two teams will faceoff tonight when the puck drops at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY at 7:00 P.M.
The Thunderbirds will return to play at the MassMutual Center tomorrow night when they take on the Providence Bruins for the third time in eight days. The puck will drop at 7:05 P.M.
