SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Springfield Thunderbirds rebounded from Wednesday night’s loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers by getting two goals from Anthony Greco, as they defeated the Sound Tigers 5-3 on Friday night.
Greco scored his team-leading 16th goal of the season and his first of the evening on a wrist shot to beat Sound Tigers goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis with 2:52 remaining in the first period to give the Thunderbirds the 1-0 lead.
Kellen Jones responded for the Sound Tigers 1:12 into the second period with the setup from Connor Jones with a wrist shot from the right side to beat Thunderbirds goaltender Evan Cowley to make it 1-1.
Thomas Schemitsch went on an odd-man rush and beat Gudlevskis for his sixth goal of the season to make it 2-1.
Greg Chase scored his first goal in a Thunderbirds uniform with the setup from Chase Balisy to make it 3-1 for the Thunderbirds after two periods of play.
Early in the third, Mikkel Aaagaard extended the lead for the Thunderbirds with help from Chase to make it 4-1.
From there, Ryan Bourque and the Sound Tigers tried to rally back. There was a scramble near the crease and he was able to put in his first goal of the evening to make it 4-2. Minutes later, Bourque scored his second goal of the evening with 8:57 remaining in regulation.
But the comeback would be for naught, as Chase Balisy setup Greco again and fired in his second of the evening and his team-leading 17th goal of the season to make it 5-3.
Thunderbirds goaltender Evan Cowley finished the evening with 33 saves.
The Thunderbirds will be back in action tonight against the Providence Bruins. It will be the final Thunderbirds game before the AHL All-Star Break.
