ROCHESTER, NY – The Springfield Thunderbirds will take on the road for the final three games in three days during the 2016-17 season. With 12 games remaining during the campaign, the Thunderbirds are currently 17 points out of a playoff spot with the Providence Bruins and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers tied in points for fourth place in the American Hockey League’s Atlantic Division. Providence has the tie breaker with a better points percentage.
The Thunderbirds will take on the Rochester Americans tonight and Sunday at Blue Cross Arena. Last time out, the Thunderbirds defeated the Rochester Americans 2-0 back on March 12th. Thunderbirds goaltender Adam Wilcox earned his first shutout as a Thunderbird. Anthony Greco and Paul Thompson scored for the Thunderbirds in the win. Rochester did take the win in the first meeting between these two teams back in November. The puck drop tonight at Blue Cross Arena will be at 7:05 P.M. and on Sunday at 3:05 P.M.
In the middle game of the three-game set, the Thunderbirds will travel to Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday to take on the Toronto Marlies. The Marlies are in a playoff spot currently, just two points behind the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL North Division. The Marlies played against the Thunderbirds back on January 22nd at the MassMutual Center. In that game, Kyle Rau scored for the Thunderbirds to give them the early lead. Marc-Andre Cliche and Byron Froese scored goals in the second period for the Marlies to give them the 2-1 victory. Marlies goaltender Garret Sparks made 32 saves in the for the Marlies. The puck will drop at Ricoh Coliseum Saturday night at 5:00 pm.
NOTES: Thunderbirds goaltender Reto Berra has been on a call up to the Florida Panthers. Berra started in goal on Tuesday for the Panthers against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes defeated the Panthers 4-3. Berra made 21 saves in the loss.
The Thunderbirds will be back at the MassMutual Center on Wednesday when the Bridgeport Sound Tigers come to town for a 7:05 pm faceoff.
