SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Springfield Thunderbirds have released six guaranteed home dates for the 2017-18 season. The home opener will be held on Saturday night October 14 at MassMutual Center.
Last year, the Thunderbirds sold out their inaugural home opener last year, a game they rallied back to win in overtime against St. John’s, in front of a crowd of 6,793 people. It was the largest crowd for hockey at the venue in a decade.
The Thunderbirds will play on Friday, November 3, along with games on Saturday, December 9 & 16. The guaranteed six-pack rounds out with games on January 6 and 27. The opponents of these games will be announced at a later date.
While the Thunderbirds did not qualify for the American Hockey League Calder Cup Playoffs this season, the big winner for the Thunderbirds was the attendance. The Thunderbirds averaged 4,664 per game at the MassMutual Center including three sellouts. Overall attendance was up 50 percent compared to when the Springfield Falcons were here their final season of the 2015-16 campaign before they were sold to the Arizona Coyotes and relocated to Tuscon, AZ.
The support by the fans was reciprocated by the Thunderbirds on the ice. The team won 12 of their final 14 home games, including five in a row at MassMutual Center.
The rest of the 2017-18 Springfield Thunderbirds schedule will be released by the American Hockey League later this summer.
