LAFAYETTE, La. — On Monday night’s Inside the SPHL Podcast with special guest league commissioner Doug Price, The Sin Bin revealed their fourth annual SPHL All-Star Team, presented in conjunction with the Southern Professional Hockey League and DASH Auctions. For the third year, fans were allowed to select a player from a list of finalists to both the north and south teams. After a week-long poll which totaled 119,300 votes, defenseman Larry Smith from the Macon Mayhem and Quad City Storm forward Shane Bennett were selected by the fans to the 2019 All-Star squads. Thanks to all of the fans who participated in the 2019 SPHL All-Star Fan Vote and for making this such a fun experience for fans, players, and families!
The remainder of the north and south teams were picked by the SPHL writing staff with input from coaches from across the league. The final squads each consist of eight forwards, four defensemen, and two goaltenders. Birmingham Bulls coach Jamey Hicks and Peoria Rivermen bench boss Jean-Guy Trudel were named by their peers to head up the Team South and Team North squads, respectively. Trudel was named an All-Star coach for the third time, previously selected to coach the 2016 and 2017 squads, while Hicks makes his first appearance as an All-Star coach.
Huntsville Havoc forward Sy Nutkevitch became the first player named to three consecutive all-star teams, having been named to the 2017 and 2018 squads. Four other players – Quad City’s Peter Di Salvo (2016), Knoxville’s Danny Cesarz (2017), Peoria’s Alec Hagaman (2018), and Macon’s Jake Trask (2018) – make their second all-star appearances.
Commemorative jerseys for the 2019 SPHL All-Star Team were produced by OT Sports and will be auctioned on DASH Auctions, with a bidding window open until February 18th, 2019.
