There is less than two weeks to go in the ECHL’s regular season and the invitation list for the Kelly Cup playoffs has shrunken down in the Eastern Conference. Out west, the list remains wide open.

Teams in the Kelly Cup Playoffs:

East: Toledo Walleye, South Carolina Stingrays, Manchester Monarchs, Florida Everblades
West: Missouri Mavericks

Tuesday’s Key Matchups:

The Elmira Jackals look to increase their foothold on a playoff berth and leapfrog the Reading Royals for seventh place in the Eastern Conference as the two squads tangle at Santander Arena in Reading, PA.

Every game on the western conference slate has playoff ramifications Tuesday night.

The Sin Bin’s Dakota Johnson covers what is on the line in tomorrow’s Fort Wayne/Cincinnati tilt. The Komets can clinch a playoff berth with a win and a Tulsa loss or an overtime/shootout loss and a Tulsa loss in regulation.

In Tulsa, the Oilers look to get back in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot with a win against the Colorado Eagles.

Finally in Wichita, the Quad City Mallards look to improve their hold on the eighth playoff spot with a win against the Wichita Thunder. A Mallards win and Colorado loss would mean a tie — points wise — for the seventh playoff spot with the Eagles, however, the Eagles would still own the spot, thanks to four more regulation/overtime wins than the Mallards (35 to 31, Eagles).

A Mallards win (regulation or overtime/shootout) plus a Colorado loss in overtime or shootout would formally eliminate the Indy Fuel, Rapid City Rush and Evansville IceMen from playoff contention.

Here are the Magic Numbers for clinching division titles as of Monday:

Division Division Leader Magic Number
East Manchester 3
North Toledo CLINCHED
South South Carolina 13
Midwest Fort Wayne 7

West Idaho 9

The races for playoff positioning are very tight in both the eastern and western conferences. Here is a breakdown of those races:

Eastern Conference:

Rank Team GP Wins Losses OT/SOL Pts This Week’s Games
6 Wheeling 67 34 25 8 76 Hm v. REA Fri, Hm v. MAN Sat, @TOL Sun
7 Reading 66 33 24 9 75 Hm v. ELM Tue, @WHL Fri, Hm v. NOR Sat & Sun

9 Orlando 65 31 25 9 71 Hm v. FLA Wed, @SC Fri/Sat
10 Kalamazoo 66 33 28 5 71 @GVL Thu, Fri, Sat

Of the teams in contention for playoff spots, Reading and Kalamazoo have what appears to be the easiest schedules this week. All of these teams have over .500 records in their last 10 games. Orlando has a tough slog ahead to make the playoffs, playing Florida and South Carolina the rest of the season.

Western Conference:

With another poor week, the Tulsa Oilers’ playoff hopes will be on life-support. The Oilers sports an 0-2 record against the Eagles, 2-2 record against the Mallards and a 1-2 record against the Evansville Icemen. Idaho, Fort Wayne, Allen, and Utah all can clinch playoff berths this week.
