NORTH CHARLESTON, SC- Today was a resurgence of youth for the Stingrays with the addition of two rookies. Head coach Ryan Warsofsky announced today that the club has signed Defenseman Evan Moore and Alex Pompeo.
The 24-year-old Moore is coming off a successful four-year career at Robert Morris University in which he appeared in 152 collegiate games with 31 points (four goals and 27 assists).
Moore made a strong impression during his time at Robert Morris. “Evan has such a high compete level and has a great defensive presence on the ice,” head coach Derek Schooley said. “We heard what a good person he was and about his competitive streak… He’s brought a lot to our hockey program.”
His penalty killing and shot blocking prowess make him a great fit for the Stingrays defensive corps that has annually finished at the top of the league under Warsofsky’s guidance.
Pompeo, 23, has split his collegiate career between the University of Southern Maine and Salve Regina University. He finished his collegiate career with 75 points (26 goals and 49 assists) and led Salve Regina to an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast championship. The blueliner finished out the 15-16 season as a member of the Columbus Cottonmouths in the SPHL scoring six points (two goals and four assists) in 10 games.
Pompeo also received high praise from his collegiate coach at Salve Regina. “He’s a hardworking kid, and he’s humble. You never hear him talk about points, he just wants to win, and to be a part of something,” said head coach Andy Boschetto. “He makes other people around him better,” Boschetto said. “A great player does things naturally as an individual, but when you make players around you better then that is what a good teammate is and a good player.”
Pompeo was All-ECAC Northeast First Team both seasons with the Seahawks and was nominated for the Joe Concannon Award, presented to the best American-born college hockey player in New England at the NCAA Division II/III level.
The Stingrays roster now stands at six players with Patrick Gual and Marcus Perrier at forward and Evan Moore, Alex Pompeo, Colton Saucerman and Steve Weinstein on defense.
