RAPID CITY, SD — The Idaho Steelheads overcame the flurry of the home team to top the Rapid City Rush 3-0 in “Round 2” of this three round bout to close out 2016.
Idaho would light the lamp first, winning a faceoff midway through the opening frame. The puck would eventually find its way to Miro Karjalainen who deflected it by Rush netminder Adam Morrison at 9:03 for the 1-0 lead. The goal was Karjalainen’s first professional goal in North America.
Idaho would double their lead less than three minutes later on their first powerplay opportunity of the night. Travis Ewanyk fired a shot top shelf over Morrison at 12:00 for his 13th goal of the season.
The Steelheads added one more to the stat sheet when Branden Troock took a blueline turnover in the Rush zone and fired a surgical strike by Morrison at 12:58 of the middle frame. This was his third goal on the season.
Despite outshooting the opposition 47-22 the Rush were not able to find the back of the net during 60 minutes of play. The shutout was the first against the Rush on the year.
Branden Komm gets the win stopping all 47 shots he faced while Adam Morrison takes the loss stopping 19-of-22 shots on the night.
Both teams will square-off for the pivotal “Round 3” on Saturday night to close out the weekend series and 2016. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:05pm at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Ice Arena.
Prior to the game Friday night, the Rush made a trade with the Wichita Thunder, sending Brett Perlini to the Air Capital and getting back Logan Nelson in return.
