SPRINGFIELD, MA – At Pizzeria Uno And Grille in Springfield Tuesday evening, the Springfield Thunderbirds revealed their jerseys and team mascot for the 2016-2017 season at a town hall meeting.
At the event, fans got to see a preview of the team’s jerseys for next season. The team’s name and jerseys will pay homage to the Air Force planes which are based at Barnes Air National Guard Base and Westover Air Reserve Base in western Massachusetts. Below are a couple of renditions:
“We wanted our jerseys to be distinctly unique to Springfield and the new Thunderbirds’ brand, and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome,” said Thunderbirds Executive Vice President Nathan Costa. Per AHL rules, the team will wear white jerseys at home and red on the road until the Christmas break, then switch. The team says that because of the accelerated timelines due to acquiring the franchise, the team’s jerseys will be available for retail sale in October.
Also at the meeting, fans got to meet with Costa and Head Coach Geordie Kinnear for a question & answer session. The highlight of the Q & A was the naming of the franchise’s first mascot, who will be called Boomer.
“There was an overwhelming response to the recent ‘Name the Mascot’ contest recently conducted through our website and social media channels, and it was a pretty easy decision based on the voting as Boomer was a fan-favorite,” Costa said. “We can’t wait to get Boomer out into the local community, and we look forward to creating lasting memories for fans young and old for years to come here in Springfield.”
Finally, the team announced they will play in two preseason games on Friday, October 7th against the Providence Bruins and on Saturday, October 8th against the Hartford Wolf Pack. The puck will drop for both games at 7:05 P.M. at the Massmutual Center. The Thunderbirds will kick off their regular season on Saturday, October 15th when they travel to play the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The home opener for the Thunderbirds will be on Saturday, October 22nd against the St. John’s Ice Caps at 7:05 P.M.
