LAFAYETTE, LA — We took off a week for the holidays, and we wish all y’all have had a merry Christmas and a happy 2018. We’ve had a bit of shuffling in our return to our SPHL writers poll, with the exception of the top-ranked Pensacola Ice Flyers and #2 Peoria Rivermen cementing their status atop the chart. For our third straight poll, all four of our writers have Pensacola and Peoria ranked either first or second as the long-distance rivals have separated themselves from the pack in the league standings.

“The Pack” are the next five teams in this week’s poll – #3 Macon, #4 Huntsville, #5 Evansville, #6 Knoxville, and #7 Mississippi – all are within four points of each other in the standings. The Mayhem, on the heels of their recent three-game winning streak, has stepped up from fifth to third from our last poll. Meanwhile, the RiverKings – 3-7-0 in their last ten games – may have hit rock bottom at the seventh position in our poll.

An eight-point standings gap has emerged between the  Ice Bears and #8 Roanoke. The Dawgs have shown signs of life under new head coach and former Peoria captain Dan Bremner, going 2-0-1 over the last week. Roanoke swept #9 Fayetteville in a two-game home-and-home series last week and has earned unanimous agreement as the eighth-place team in our survey. Finally, a six-game winless streak has relegated the Birmingham Bulls back to our cellar.
