LAFAYETTE, La. — The shuffling continues in the muddled middle of our SPHL staff polling this week, as the Huntsville Havoc return to our top five list after a week’s break.

Meanwhile, for the first time in over a month, the Macon Mayhem return to the top spot after the Birmingham Bulls faltered on Saturday night. The Mayhem and Bulls split the first-place votes among the writers. We’ve regarded the pair as 1a and 1b in the writers’ room, and we expect this to continue as long as both continue to hold serve on the ice.

The Peoria Rivermen continue to be a big topic of debate among the staff. Unfairly or not, we tend to hold the Rivermen to a higher standard given their strength of schedule this season. Our expectations are similar to how we view SEC non-conference games; we expect not just wins – but wins with style points – until the meat of Peoria’s schedule begins with their trip to Macon at the end of January.

Finally, for the first time this season, the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs make an appearance in the PowerFive after some strong wins over the past couple of weeks. The Dawgs are winners in four of their last five games and making a strong push up the league standings.

We’ll be back next Wednesday with the latest SPHL PowerFive poll!
