The five-game winless skid of the Macon Mayhem has dropped the team all the way down from second to fifth in our poll, with a huge variation among our writers.
In this week’s poll, there are two philosophies evident between our staff: those who have a long-term view of teams and others who look at short-term performance. Fortunately, we do take an average of our staff opinions to get as accurate of a picture as possible.
I think long-term in my ranking philosophy and don’t like to make big changes from week-to-week. I still view Peoria/Birmingham/Macon as my top three teams, as I have throughout the season, with Huntsville/Knoxville/Fayetteville/Roanoke as very similar teams – which I find difficult to rank from 4-7 each week. Unfortunately, I can’t rank each of these teams as 4A-4D, which is how I truly view them.
The Fayetteville Marksmen’s five-game win streak over the holiday has vaulted them into the fourth position. Meanwhile, persistence and consistency have paid off for the Peoria Rivermen. The Rivs take over the top spot in our poll for the first time this season. In the standings, Peoria holds a four-point lead over second-place Birmingham and are tops in the league with an 8-2-0 record over their last ten games.
Agree? Disagree? Let the debate begin as we start the second half of the SPHL season!
