RAPID CITY, SD – A valiant effort in the 3rd period falls short as the Rapid City Rush split the weekend series with the league-leading Missouri Mavericks after falling 3-1 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Ice Arena.
The first half of the opening frame would paint the picture on how this game would end up as the visiting Mavs lit the lamp three times in under seven minutes of play.
The first came from at the 2:29 mark when Jesse Root took the loose puck to their offensive zone only to have his pass get deflected by Rocco Carzo for the 1-0 lead. Just 34-seconds later the Mavs would double their lead with Andrew Courtney took a hard shot from the slot. Frustration finally mounted for Coach Joe Ferras when Scott Wamsganz drove home the puck point blank passed Danny Battochio at 6:38 of the period.
This third goal on just nine shots for the visitors would end the night for the Batman as Ferras sent Sam Marotta to take up defense between the pipes.
And he did an excellent job at that, stopping the remaining 22-shots that Missouri would pepper the Rush net with.
Zach Cohen gave the home team something to cheer for in the opening minutes of the 3rd period when he took his own rebound over Mavs netminder Josh Robinson at 18:01. Rapid City definitely stepped up the tempo in the final frame, even pulling Marotta with just over 3-minutes left to play.
But they wouldn’t come any closer to tying the game.
Battochio would take the loss, stopping 6-of-9 shots he faced before being pulled. Robinson is credited with the win, his 14th in in a row, as he stopped 27 of 28 shots on the night.
The Rush now hit the road to take on Evansville on Wednesday, January 13th. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:15 pm MT/6:15 pm CT.
