READING, PA – The Reading Royals opened their season at home against the Elmira Jackals Saturday night. The Royals were looking for some revenge after being out-scored by Elmira 9-1 in their two pre-season games. The Royals absolutely got that revenge as they opened the season with a 6-2 victory over their division rivals.
Reading controlled the most of the game during the first period. Olivier Labelle opened up the scoring 6:30 into the game, capitalizing on a hooking penalty by Elmira’s Joel Wetmore. Just one minute and twenty-two seconds later, Steven Swavely knocked home the second goal of the night. The scoring frenzy continued as Kris Newbury gave the Royals a three-goal lead with 9:41 left in the first period.
The Jackals, down three goals to none, got on the board late in the first thanks to a power play goal by Charlie Mosey. Elmira’s momentum spilled over into the second period as they controlled most of the play. Mike Radja brought the Jackals within one, taking advantage of a poor turnover in Reading’s offensive zone.
The Royals gained their momentum back after Chris McCarthy put home a tic-tac-toe goal with only 9 seconds left in the second period. The rest of the game was all Reading. Olivier Labelle scored his second of the night on the power play midway through the third period. Ryan Penny put the final nail in the coffin, scoring the Royals’ sixth goal of the night with 5 minutes left in the game.
This night could have been completely different as the Royals were shorthanded eight times during the game. Despite being down a man so much during the game, the Royals still outshot their opponent 38-20.
The Royals travel to Wheeling to face the Nailers on Thursday, October 20th at 7:05 pm EST.
