BOISE, ID – The Royals came up short against the Steelheads in a goalie dual Friday night. Mark Dekanich came up short for the Royals in a shootout despite posting 41 saves on 43 shots. Idaho’s Branden Komm stood tall posting 32 saves on 34 shots as well as saving all 4 shots he faced during the shootout.
The Royals penalty kill continues to be a problem as Anthony Luciani opened up the scoring on a power play in the first period to give Idaho a 1-0 lead. Penalties were a problem for both teams in the first; racking up 5 total penalties in just 11 minutes.
The second period gave the Royals some momentum as Mike Marcou blasted home the tying goal from the right point. Unfortunately, the momentum was short lived as Nick Luukko took a roughing penalty with Idaho’s Joe Basaraba. Both teams would pick up a total of 5 more penalties in the second period alone.
The third period started with a bang as Robbie Czarnik scored the go-ahead power play goal for the Royals just 1:07 into the period. The lead was short-lived as Kellan Lain tied up the game almost 5 minutes later. 60 minutes was not enough as both teams headed into an action-packed overtime. Both goalies made multiple big-time saves to keep their team alive.
After probably the most stressful five minutes in a while, we headed into an even more stressful shootout. As with the rest of the game, both goalies stood tall to force the shootout into four rounds. Will Merchant netted the eventual game-winner for the Steelheads.
The Royals get a shot at payback as they face the Steelheads tonight at 9:10pm ET/ 7:10pm MT.
