MOLINE, Ill. – Little by little, the puzzle pieces are falling in to place for the Quad City SPHL team. On Friday, the first head coach in Quad-City’s SPHL history was announced, and it is a familiar name to fans of the Illinois-based team. Dave Pszenyczny is taking the reins of the team that has yet to find a name.
Pszenyczny has spent the last three years in Peoria, Illinois, 80 miles south-east from his new home. During his three seasons in Peoria, Pszenyczny served as captain of the team last season and helped steer the Rivermen to three consecutive Presidents Cup Finals appearances. Last season, Pszenyczny also won SPHL Defenseman of the Year honors. Before playing in Peoria, the Sterling Heights, MI native also played in the AHL, the ECHL, and the CHL, with over 600 games under his belt.
While in the CHL, Pszenyczny won a championship with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in 2011. He then played three seasons with the Missouri Mavericks before the CHL/ECHL merger, moving to Tulsa for his first ECHL season.
“Throughout our interview process, we wanted a coach that believes in community involvement,” said Quad City co-owner John Dawson in the team’s press release. “Dave realizes the community is our fan base, and if we can’t get out and support our community, then why should they support us?”
There’s a lot for Pszenyczny, doubling as head coach and director of hockey operations, to do in the next few months, as he’ll need to build the team from the skates up. The expansion draft gave the team six players already, but selling players on a nameless expansion team can be a tall order. Speaking with Bobby Metcalf of the Quad-City Times, Pszenyczny seems up to the task.
“I always love challenges… I’m eager to get to the Quad-Cities and get to work. I’ll put a team together the Quad-Cities can be proud of, on and off the ice… I want a blue-collar, hard-working team. … I want everyone coming in with an honest work ethic and things will take care of themselves,” said Pszenyczny.
Fans will be able to meet Coach Pszenyczny on Thursday, June 21, at the Harris Pizza located at 2520 18th Street in Bettendorf. Pszenyczny will be officially introduced at a 2 p.m. press conference.
