Welcome to Championship Wednesday! By the end of the night, the E.A. “Bud” Gingher and Bruce Taylor Memorial trophies will be handed out, signifying the champions of the Eastern and Western conferences.

This is the first time in ECHL history that both conference final series have gone the allotted 7 games. It is also the seventh game 7 this playoff season, which is a new record. In the five previous game 7s played, home teams are 5-0. All-time, the home team is 21-8 and have won 17 of the last 23.

The Toledo Walleye are the first team in ECHL history to play 3 straight game 7s and the 3rd team in league history to force a game 7 after being down 3-0 in a series. In the two previous game 7s this season, the Walleye are led offensively by Kyle Bonis (2 goals,) Tyler Barnes (2 goals) and Shane Bersenbach (1 goal, 2 assists.) It will be interesting to see if head coach Derek Lalonde sticks with Neil Conway or goes back to Jeff Lerg in between the pipes. Should Toledo complete the comeback, they would become the second team ever to win a series after being down 3-0.

South Carolina is playing in their second game 7 of the playoffs. In the opening round, the Stingrays scored three 3rd period goals to defeat the Reading Royals. All-time, South Carolina is 2-0 in game 7s.

On the other side of the bracket, the Allen Americans and Ontario Reign will battle for the western conference title. For Allen, this is their first game 7 in the ECHL. All-time, the Americans are 5-0 in game 7s, including 3-0 with Steve Martinson behind the bench. After losing 3 straight earlier in the series, the Americans have rallied to force the game 7. In 10 previous times, the team which trailed 3-1 has won four times.

Ontario is playing their second game 7 of the playoffs, having defeated the Colorado Eagles in the Pacific Division Semis. All-time, the Reign are 1-1 in game 7s.

We will have full coverage of tonight’s game 7s. Dakota Johnson will have coverage of South Carolina/Toledo, while Duck and Hound will have coverage of Reign/Americans.
