PITTSBURGH, PA – The Pittsburgh Penguins announced a trade Tuesday afternoon. The Penguins traded forward Josh Archibald, goaltender Sean Maguire and a 2019 sixth-round pick to the Arizona Coyotes. In return, the Penguins acquired goaltender Michael Leighton and a 2019 fourth-round pick. The trade was announced by Penguins Executive Vice President and General Manager Jim Rutherford.
The 36-year-old Leighton has spent this season split between the Arizona Coyotes and Tampa Bay Lightning organizations. He has played 14 AHL games this season split between Syracuse and the Chicago Wolves. His record stands at 4-4-4 with one shutout.
A five-time AHL All-Star, Leighton began his professional career in 2001-02 with the Norfolk Admirals (AHL). He had won 20 games in the AHL six times. In 2007-08, he was the AHL Goaltender of the Year with the Albany River Rats. The Petrolia, Ontario native has played in 110 career NHL games with four teams. He played parts of three season with the Hurricanes from 2007-10 while Jim Rutherford was Carolina’s GM.
Leighton played for Philadelphia during the 2009-10 season and was a member of the 2010 team that played for a Stanley Cup. In that postseason, Leighton went 8-3 with three shutouts. He was originally a sixth-round (165th overall) selection of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1999 NHL Draft.
Archibald, is in his fifth professional season. In 188 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton the Regina, Saskatoon native has 32 goals with 32 assists for 64 points. He had also appeared in 14 games for the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins recording three goals and no assists. He also appeared in four games during the postseason for the 2017 Stanley Cup run for the Penguins. The 25-year-old was a sixth-round (174th overall) pick of the Penguins in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Prior to turning pro, Archibald played three years at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. While with the Mavericks, he recorded 58 goals and 58 assists for 116 points.
Maguire is in his second year of professional hockey. In 47 ECHL games for the Wheeling Nailers, the 24-year old has a 22-19-0 record with a 3.21 GAA and a .901 save percentage. In January of 2017, Maguire was named ECHL Goaltender of the Month. Sean has also appeared in six games for the AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins compiling a 2-1-1 record with a 2.49 GAA and .917 save percentage.
The Powell River, BC native spent three years at Boston University before beginning his pro career. As a Terrier, Maguire played in 62 games with a 29-29-1, a 2.58 GAA and a 0.922 SVP. He also spent two years with the Powell River Kings of the BCHL. Maguire was drafted by the Penguins in the fourth round (113th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
He will report to the Fort Wayne Komets.
