WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Monday afternoon, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins announced the signing of four players to American Hockey League contracts, three of whom should be very familiar to fans in northeast Pennsylvania.
Defenseman Will O’Neill and Forwards Patrick McGrath, Ryan Haggerty and Cam Brown all signed on the dotted line for the 2018-2019 season.
O’Neill, 30, signed up for a second stint with the organization, after a two-year stint with the nearby Lehigh Valley Phantoms. O’Neill earned AHL All-Star honors in 2015-16 when he put up 42 assists and led all Penguins’ defensemen in points with 50. Overall, O’Neill has amassed 207 points in 396 career AHL contests and played his first NHL game for Philadelphia on November 2, 2017 in St. Louis against the Blues.
McGrath, from nearby Shavertown, Pa., enters his fifth professional season, accounting for seven points and 262 penalty minutes for the only professional team he has ever played with. He set a new AHL career high last season, with two goals in 19 games, also accounting for 95 penalty minutes.
Haggerty, 25, returns to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after a career-year with the club in 2017-18. He tallied career-highs with 16 goals and 21 assists on the campaign, including his first pro hat trick against the Belleville Senators on January 12. The native of Stamford, Connecticut has accounted for 51 goals and 56 assists (106 points) in 217 career AHL games between the Penguins, Hartford Wolf Pack, and Rockford IceHogs.
Brown was one of the Wheeling Nailers best players last season, tallying 53 points in 55 games, with 17 goals and 36 assists. While on a player tryout contract (PTO) with the Springfield Thunderbirds, he put up a goal and two assists for three points in 13 games. He also appeared in one game for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last season, the regular season finale against the Hershey Bears.
Recently, the organization announced their 20th home opener would take place on Saturday, October 6. Expect to see the full 2018-19 schedule this week.
