RAPID CITY, SD — The Rush looked to end their losing streak to the Eagles but instead the visitors scored three straight goals in less than 45 seconds en route to a 5-1 victory on Friday night.
Colorado finally found the back of the net after peppering the Rush net with 17 shots on goal in the opening frame when Johnny Lazo fired the puck past Danny Battochio with 2:51 left in the period.
Rapid City would even the score at 1-1 when Danick Gauthier picked up his first goal in a Rush uniform at 10:33 in the middle frame as he poked the loose puck past Eagles’ netminder Eric Levine.
Misfortune would find the home team just minutes later.
Colorado would score it’s first of three quick goals when Everett Sheen fired a shot past Battochio’s glove to regain the lead at 13:50. Before anyone could regain their composure the Eagles would then double their lead to 3-1 at 14:13 when Lazo picked up his second goal of the night off a rebound shot past the Rush netminder. The flood continued when Kyle Kraemer fired a shot from the near wall at 14:34 for a 4-1 advantage.
This prompted a changing of the guard as Sam Marotta would come in for relief of Battochio for the remainder of the game.
While things did seem to even out it looked as though the Rush had lost all fight within their game. A few scuffles in the final frame was highlighted when Darryl Bootland tapped home a powerplay goal at 7:18 to give the Eagles a 5-1 lead and the eventual final score.
Danny Battochio takes the loss stopping 21 of 25 shots and Marotta stopped 6 of 7 in relief. Eric Levine gets the win stopping 17-of-18 shots against the Rush.
Both teams will square off tomorrow night in the second game of the weekend series of the Crystal Cup. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm. And on a side note it was revealed the Rush have secured a new deal with 100.3 The Fox to broadcast all Rush games again starting with their road game against the Steelheads on January 27th.
