SPRINGFIELD, MA – MGM Springfield announced they will take over the management role of the MassMutual Center, home of the Springfield Thunderbirds. MGM Resorts along with the MCCA (Massachusetts Convention Center Authority) and Spectra unveiled the transition plan and said the takeover could happen as early on July 1st.
MGM Springfield President Mike Mathis talked with The Sin Bin about the plans about the new management:
“We are very happy. Its been a long process and it started with an early commitment and in 2012 when we first got to Springfield and saw the connectivity between the MassMutual Center and the property we’re developing for the resort. It was really a no brainer.” Mathis said.
In discussions with the state, who owns the MassMutual Center, Mathis and MGM Springfield wanted an active role with the building and think about both sides of Main Street could be marketed as an entertainment campus.
Mathis and MGM Springfield are really excited about the Thunderbirds. Mathis said not enough credit can be given to local investor Paul Picknelly, who is a partner with MGM and led a local business group to bring AHL hockey back to Springfield. Mathis believes the hockey is great family entertainment and compliments what MGM is trying to do with a lot of the non-gaming and entertainment offerings.
“We want to take care of that team and being the landlord and being able to work with the team and their management group on supporting their marketing and other operations is really the icing on the cake. We’re a big sponsor of theirs separately. Their success is our success.” Mathis said.
The cross marketing relationship is really important and this is one of those win-win situations.
“It’s important for us that we provide as many different entertainment offerings to the people we want to come down to visit our resort and it doesn’t all have to be in our four corners. The Thunderbirds are providing 40 days and nights of local hometown entertainment. It’s really a great opportunity.” Mathis said.
MGM Springfield Casino is currently being built in Downtown Springfield. The resort is planned to be open in 2018.
