INDEPENDENCE, MO – The Missouri Mavericks announced on Thursday that they have signed center Radoslav Illo and re-signed winger Reed Seckel for the 2016-17 season.
The 27-year-old Seckel is a familiar face for Mavericks fans after coming over from the Indy Fuel early in the 2015-16 season. Seckel instantly provided a lot of wallop in a small package as a devastating checker and a gritty blue-collar attitude that played out well in Missouri. Seckel also chipped in eight goals, 13 assists, and 56 PIMs in the regular season with two goals and eight PIMs in the playoffs.
Rookie coach John-Scott Dickson will depend on Seckel to bring the same tenacity and grit we all saw from him last season as he enters his second complete season in the ECHL. It will be interesting to see what line Dickson has in mind for Seckel after he spent a good bit of last season on the Andrew Courtney line.
Newcomer Radoslav Illo comes to the Mavericks after spending the last part of the 2015-16 season with the Idaho Steelheads. The negotiating rights with Illo were included as compensation in a “future considerations” deal at the conclusion of last season for forward Torin Syndeman.
The 5’ 11”, 198 lbs. Slovakian center was a fifth-round draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks in the 2009 Entry Draft. Since then, Illo spent time in the USHL before attending Bemidji State University where he registered 25 goals, 29 assists and 77 PIMs over four years. After a year in the Slovak league playing for Martin MHC, Illo spent 2015-16 in the ECHL between Tulsa, Norfolk, and Idaho.
Illo looks like a player that has potential to be a solid goal scorer after registering solid numbers in the USHL, but has yet to show it consistently at the professional level. This may be a depth signing with a high upside and little to lose. We shall see.
The Mavericks roster as it now stands:
Forwards: Andrew Courtney, Dan Correale, Darren Nowick, Yuri Terao, Rocco Carzo, Dane Fox, Shawn Pauly, Radoslav Illo, Reed Seckel
Defensemen: Bryce Aneloski, Kevin Tansey, Samuel Noreau
Finally, the Mavericks also announced ahead of the annual FanFest this Saturday that Miracle on Ice member and New York Islanders director or scouting, Ken Morrow, will be signing autographs from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The event runs from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. and is always a great way to kick off the Mavs season.
