Independence, MO – In Game One of this Best of Seven Western Conference Quarterfinals series between the Missouri Mavericks and Quad City Mallards, the two teams combined for nine goals in 60 minutes of play. Sunday’s Game Two was the polar opposite as both teams scratched and clawed their way to create any kind of scoring opportunity.
Mavericks netminder Parker Milner and his counterpart, Brody Hoffman of Quad City, put on quite the goalie show, exchanging big save after big save, and frustrating the opposing team’s talented forwards up front.
The Mavericks would get on the board first as Reed Seckel beat Hoffman from the slot, whistling a wrister over the Mallards goalie. Despite 10 shots on goal for both teams in the frame, Seckel’s goal would be the only mark on the scoresheet.
Mavericks forward Josh Holmstrom would double the home team’s lead when he stuffed home a loose puck in front, despite being knocked to the ice to make it 2-0 Mavericks. The rest of the second period would be back and forth, high-paced play. Milner and Hoffman would steal the show, exchanging highlight reel saves, a few on odd-man rushes for both teams.
Quad City would get on the board early in the third period as Sam Warning beat Milner from the low slot. Much to Quad City’s dismay, that would be the total result of their offensive efforts for the game. The Mallards out-shot the Mavericks 12-4 in the third period, but Milner was the difference maker, and his brilliant rebound control left nothing for the crashing Mallard forwards to pounce on in front. The Mavericks would withstand a late flurry from the Mallards and skate away with a 2-1 win. Milner would finish with 28 saves in the win.
With the win, the Mavericks take a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series. Play now shifts to Moline, Illinois for Games Three, Four, and Five (if necessary). Game Three will take place on Wednesday night from the iWireless Center. Puck drop is at 6:35pm.
