RAPID CITY, SD — Another night, another victory for the Quad City Mallards. After losing their first two games of the season, they have now reached a 2-2-0 record after finishing the second of two games against the Rapid City Rush Saturday night. Justin Kovacs helped lead the way to the victory, racking up two goals and an assist on the way to a 4-1 final score for the Mallards.

The Mallards started the scoring early, Kovacs finding the back of the net behind Kent Patterson at just 3:43 of the first frame. Sam Warning earned the lone assist on Kovac’s first goal; Alex Petan was the third on their line but didn’t make his mark on the scoresheet quite yet. Petan would then double the Mallards’ lead during the middle stanza, with Kovacs and Warning assisting.

After the game in Fort Wayne, I said I expected Coach Ruskowski to keep the Warning-Petan-Kovacs line together. They’ve quickly become the most consistently scoring line for the Mallards, appearing on the scoresheet at least once in every game and combining for 6 goals, 9 assists, and 15 points.

With 28 seconds left in the second period, former Mallard Anthony Collins dropped the gloves with Nelson Gadoury. Collins appeared to win the bout handily, with not only a first-year player but a first-time fighter.

Lindsay Sparks performed a spin-o-rama around Mike Wilson 26 seconds into the final period, taking a backhand shot that found twine behind CJ Motte, ending his shutout bid.

Donnie Harris would put the Mallards back into a two-goal lead seven minutes later with his first goal in a Mallards sweater; Nathan Todd and Grant Arnold assisted. Kovacs scored his second goal of the night with help from Petan and Mike Monfredo to seal the Mallards victory.

The Mallards return home to face the Missouri Mavericks at the special Wednesday start time of 6:30 CST.
