FORT WAYNE, IN — For the second night in a row, the Mallards picked up two points against an Indiana-based team. Saturday saw a much better game for the Quad City Mallards than Friday night’s shootout victory, the Mallards defeating the Fort Wayne Komets 6-2 on the road.
Former Mallard Kyle Thomas opened the scoring at 2:08 of the middle frame with help from Mike Cazzola. The Mallards would then begin a four-goal run two minutes later when Andrew Panzarella scored his first goal of the season unassisted. Fellow blueliner Kevin Gibson would give the Mallards the lead, assisted by Alex Petan and Sam Warning, four minutes later.
Captain Chris Francis extended the lead to 3-1 just a minute before Gibson dropped the gloves with Thomas. Michael Parks, just outside the Komets’ defensive zone, passed the puck to Francis as he streaked in to score. Parks then scored a goal of his own 30 seconds later. Francis earned an assist on that goal, as did Nolan LaPorte.
Just over four minutes into the final frame the Komets attempted to start a comeback but could only muster a single goal. This goal came from Cody Sol, with help from Gabriel Desjardins and Thomas. The Mallards quickly put the Komets back in their place with Jack Nevins‘ second goal in as many nights three minutes later. Warning and Brady Brassart made an impact on the scoresheet by earning the assists.
With 24 seconds left Justin Kovacs sent the puck blazing into the empty net to seal the victory for the Mallards; Warning got the assist on that goal. The win improves the Mallards’ record to 10-6-0-1 (21 points,) good for third in the Central division.
The Mallards travel to Brampton next week for a two day series against the Beast. The first game is a 10 AM start time on Thursday, followed by a 6:15 PM puck drop the following night.
