MOLINE, IL – The Quad City Mallards extended the Rapid City Rush’s losing streak to nine games, winning 4-2 in front of a crowd of over 6,000 at the i-Wireless Center Friday night.
Brady Brassart and Matt Carey teamed up to give the puck to Guillaume Gelinas at 4:08 of the first period. Gelinas found twine behind Danny Battochio while the Mallards were on the powerplay. The Mallards dominated the first period, outshooting the Rush 13-5.
The second period had the same appearance, shots favoring the home team 23-11. Gelinas scored his second goal of the night at 6:41 of the second period, Kevin Gibson and Jared Knight assisting.
The third period was fully Rapid City’s, but it was too little too late for the South Dakota based team. Just 52 seconds into the final frame Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel scored unassisted, his first goal against his former team in the i-Wireless Center. Five minutes and 55 seconds into the third period Brody Hoffman was knocked down by Jonathan Narbonne. Austin Coldwell exchanged words with Narbonne as play continued to the other end of the rink, Anthony Collins scoring during the confusion to put the Mallards up 3-1. The Rush pulled Battochio with just over a minute remaining, Sean Erickson scoring from Lindsay Sparks and Brett Kostolansky with the extra attacker with 52 seconds left on the clock. Matt Carey then scored on the empty net with four seconds remaining, sealing the win for the Mallards with help from Darren McMillan and Kevin Henderson.
With the win, the Mallards climbed into ninth place in the Western Conference, percentage points behind the Cincinnati Cyclones for the eighth and final playoff spot. The Mallards travel to Fort Wayne to take on the Komets tonight at 6:30 PM CST.
