INDEPENDENCE, MO — The Missouri Mavericks and Quad City Mallards faced off for a New Years Eve game in the gateway to the Great Plains, the end of a home-and-home series on the block. This time the fates would be less than kind to the Mallards, a reversal of Friday night’s score the end result.
The Mavericks started the scoring at the eight minutes, four seconds mark of the first period, Kyle Schempp assisting on Reed Seckel‘s goal. After the goal light went off and before the clock could start again, Jacob Doty was penalized for roughing. Thirteen seconds after being released from the sin bin, Doty scored an unassisted goal on a two-on-one situation.
Just over three minutes into the middle frame, Sam Warning put the Mallards on the board, ending Josh Robinson‘s shut-out bid. Guillaume Gelinas would be credited with the lone assist on Warning’s goal. Rocco Carzo scored the game-winning goal at 9:42 of the second period, Dane Fox and Jesse Graham assisting. Fox and Nolan LaPorte would exchange fisticuffs halfway through the final frame.
The Mallards finished their attempted comeback with two and a half minutes remaining in the game, Michael Parks finding twine behind Robinson. Brady Brassart and Chris Francis earned the apples on Parks’ tally.
The Mallards take the ice at home against the Fort Wayne Komets on January 4 at the special Wednesday start time of 6:30 CST.
