GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Matt Lorito returned for his first game in over a week to propel the Griffins to a 5-3 win over the Chicago Wolves. The win snapped a four-game winless streak for Grand Rapids.
Lorito got the Griffins on the board just 53 second into the game. Matt Puempel stole the puck from the Wolves who were whistled for a penalty, but Puempel found Ben Street who passed the puck to a wide open Lorito to beat Wolves goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo.
Chicago answered back on the power play when Ivan Barbashev tied the game at one beating Jared Coreau on his glove side.
Lorito scored his second goal of the game intercepting a pass in the offensive zone to put the Griffins back on top. The score was 2-1 after the first period.
Wolves forward Brett Sterling tied the game once again on nice pass from Barbashev. Chicago would find themselves on a 5-on-3 advantage. Former Griffin Teemu Pulkkinen put the Wolves on top with a one-timer.
The Griffins had a two man advantage later in the game and were unable to capitalize, but they were able to tie the game with Puempel finding Evgeny Svechnikov for the tying goal.
Lorito notched the winning goal with just under 14 minutes remaining, finishing off the hat trick. Dominic Turgeon would later add an empty net goal to seal a 5-3 win for the Griffins.
Coreau was solid in net stopping 33 shots. He has all three of the victories for Grand Rapids this season.
The Griffins will be in Rockford this evening to battle the IceHogs for the second time this season.
