FORT WAYNE, IN – Another game against the Fort Wayne Komets, another loss for the Quad City Mallards. Six goals were scored between the two teams, five by the home team. Of the four losses suffered by the Mallards so far this season, three have come at the hands of the Komets.
Shawn Szydlowski opened the scoring with just 14 seconds left in the first period after Garrett Thompson streaked into the Mallards zone on a breakaway. Adam Vay, in his first game back from another AHL call-up to the Iowa Wild, made 19 saves in the first twenty minutes. The Mallards only had 10 shots on goal in the first period.
The lone tally of the second period came off a Trevor Cheek shot after a pass from Szydlowski to Cody Sol.
Michael Parks got the third period headed in the right direction for the Mallards, scoring his first professional goal 18 seconds into the final frame. Alex Gudbranson assisted on the only Mallards goal of the night.
Former Mallard, Kyle Thomas put the Komets up 3-1 four minutes later with Curtis Leonard and Jamie Schaafsma earning the assists. Three minutes later, Jason Binkley would add to the Komets’ lead with help from Cheek.
Dan Milan and Nolan LaPorte would drop the gloves with just under seven minutes remaining in the game after shoving in front of Komets goaltender, Eric Hartzell. Though both got in some punches, LaPorte seemed to be on the giving side of more that connected.
Cheek would then seal the deal with a shorthanded goal assisted by Taylor Crunk with 53 seconds remaining on the board.
Hartzell made 31 saves on the night to earn third star, while Cheek and Szydlowski earned first and second stars respectively.
The Mallards return home to face the Wheeling Nailers on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s 7 CST puck-drop will be preceded by the Lighting on the Commons at 6 PM. Sunday’s game starts at 4:05 PM, with a post-game skate to follow.
