ELMIRA, NY – If there was a team ready to embrace the slogan “New Year, New Me” it has to be the Elmira Jackals.

The Jackals enter the 2017 stretch of the season sitting not only in the bottom of the ECHL North Division with a record of 7-17-5-0 (19 pts) and currently sit 13 points behind the Wheeling Nailers, but as well sitting in the second to last place in the league. Lucky for the Jackals they start the new year off against the last place team in the ECHL, the Norfolk Admirals. The Jackals are 2-1 against Norfolk on the season, beating 3-2 earlier in the season and 7-4 last Friday.

Norfolk hasn’t had much luck this season. The Admirals are sitting just behind Elmira in the league standings with a 7-20-4-0 record (18pts.) The one thing in favor of this weekend’s back-to-back (weather permitting — a blizzard is expected to hit Norfolk tomorrow) is that Jackals aren’t very good on the road compared to Norfolk at home. The Jackals are 2-10-3-0 on the road compared to Norfolk at home 4-9-3-0. Both teams will be looking to start the new year on the right foot as we enter the midway point of the season.

Transactions and Player Achievements:

The ECHL All-Star rosters were announced and even though no Jackals were named to the active rosters, Jackals forward Vaclav Karabacek was named an alternate. Karabacek is currently playing for the AHL Rochester Americans, but when he was with the Jackals for 9 games between late November and early December, he scored five goals and six assists, en route to being named the league’s player of the week for Nov. 28-Dec. 4.

Today, Defenseman Brycen Martin was reassigned to Elmira from Rochester. Martin last appeared with the Jackals on Nov. 18, where he scored his first professional goal against the Brampton Beast. During his time in Rochester, Martin appeared in four games without registering a point. Martin will join the Jackals in Norfolk as they start their three-game road trip.

Writers Note:

In honor of the Jackals celebrating their 10 year ECHL anniversary, we here at The Sin Bin are currently working on an article on the top five Elmira Jackals specialty jerseys and need your help. We are currently taking suggestions from the fans on what their favorite jerseys are. If you have a picture of the jerseys or can remember the year and game the jersey is from, it would be very helpful. Send all your suggestions to either our facebook page or tweet us @SinBin_Jackals.
