Head Coach Scott Hillman continues to put together his team for the upcoming season, by adding a veteran AHL defenseman and former CHL rookie of the year to the fold.
Defenseman Zach Miskovic joins the Fuel after a six-year career with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. He served as the team’s assistant captain last season, while putting up eight points (2G, 6A) and 40 penalty minutes in 42 games. Since making his professional debut in 2009, the 6-foot, 183-pound blueliner has accrued 79 points (22g, 59a) in 280 career AHL games with Rockford, the Iowa Wild, San Antonio Rampage, Chicago Wolves and Hershey Bears. A four-year product of St. Lawrence University, Miskovic won the 2010 Calder Cup with Hershey his rookie season.
“Zach is a tremendous leader and will add to the overhaul of our blue line for the 2015-16 season,” said Fuel Head Coach and EVP of Hockey Operations Scott Hillman. “With only one returning defenseman we knew we had a lot of work to do. We set the goal at the end of last season to strengthen and add more experience to our back end, and with the likes of Quick, Pszenyczny and now Miskovic we believe we have added the necessary components to compete this season.”
The team also announced a trade on Wednesday. Coming to Indianapolis from the Atlanta Gladiators is forward Alex Lavoie. In exchange for Lavoie, the Gladiators will receive the ever-popular player known as future considerations.
Lavoie spent his rookie season with the Florida Everblades, where he collected 57 points (21G, 36A) in 67 games. Hillman and Lavoie are familiar with each other, as the two were in the CHL when Lavoie won the league’s rookie of the year award in 2014. In his one full season with the Allen Americans, he tallied 76 points (25G, 51A) in 60 games.
“Alex is a tremendously skilled centerman and he plays the game with good pace,” Hillman explained. “He is a gifted puck distributor and we believe he will be a great addition to the Indy Fuel front line.”
The signing of Miskovic and acquisition of Lavoie, the Fuel now have 15 forwards, 7 defenseman and a goalie. Additional players are expected to join the club as rosters from the NHL Blackhawks and AHL IceHogs shake down.
