EVANSVILLE, IN – The Quad City Mallards defeated the Evansville Icemen 4-1 Sunday night, three goals being scored in the final period. This was their third game in three days. The Mallards have expanded their possession of the final playoff spot to three points over the Tulsa Oilers with the win.
Tanner Eberle opened the scoring with less than two minutes to go in the opening frame, Kevin Gibson and Vladimir Nikiforov assisting. Kyle Follmer added to the Mallards’ lead with help from Mike Monfredo and Austin Coldwell late in the second period.
Andrew Himelson put Evansville on the board halfway through the third period, bouncing the puck into the net off of P.J. Musico’s skate. Alex Wideman assisted on Himelson’s tally.
Four minutes after the Icemen goal, Zach Pochiro scored to put the Mallards up 3-2. Olivier Archambault added his name to the scoresheet with an assist on that goal.
Matt Carey then scored on an empty net to seal the Mallards’ victory; Sam Warning and Gibson assisted.
With one minute left, 16 penalty minutes were handed out to four different players. Archambault and Matthew Zay both received two minutes for roughing, while Pochiro and Ryan Penny earned five for fighting. Pochiro got tagged with an extra two minutes for elbowing as well.
After the Mallards’ 3-2 victory in Cincinnati the night before, Coach Terry Ruskowski implemented a “make-it, take-it” policy: as long as the goalie wins games, he’s in net, and after a loss the goalies switch.
Musico made 33 saves in a performance that would earn him first star of he night. Christoffer Bengtsberg made 30 saves on the night.
The Mallards return to action on Friday against the Fort Wayne Komets in Indiana. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM CST. The Mallards will face the Komets again the next day before journeying home for a Sunday game against the Indy Fuel. Sunday’s game will feature another post-game skate with the Mallards presented by B100.
