DES MOINES, IA – The Griffins earned a much needed two points by rallying late in the third period and winning the game in a shootout 3-2 over the Iowa Wild. Grand Rapids will conclude their three-in-three road trip when they visit the Rockford IceHogs tonight. With the win, the Griffins record now stands at 11-15-4.
The first period was evenly paced with neither team being able to earn a good scoring chance. Iowa took advantage of a mistake by the Griffins when Gerald Mayhew stole a puck near the board and found an open Justin Kloos who beat Jared Coreau for a Wild 1-0 lead. That’s how things stood after the first period.
The Griffins tied the game in the second period when Matt Lorito collected his eighth goal of the year. Colin Campbell found a charging Dominic Turgeon who sent the puck to the net deflecting off of the stick of Lorito to tie the game at one.
The Wild reclaimed the lead with just over five minutes left in the third period. Kloos added his second goal of the off of a redirected shot from Alex Grant.
Captain Matt Ford has been playing well in the absence of key players such as Matt Puempel and Turner Elson who sat out once again due to injuries. He came up huge again for the Griffins, tying the game with 1:47 left in regulation for his 11th goal of the campaign. A key face off was claimed by Eric Tangradi who found Ford for a blast to tie the game.
The game eventually entered overtime with neither team being able to collect a goal. Both teams were heading to a shootout for the second consecutive game against one another.
The Griffins prevailed in the shootout with goals coming from Ben Street, Axel Holmstrom, and the winner from Dominic Turgeon. Coreau stopped six shots in the shootout to help in the win.
Grand Rapids and Rockford will face-off tonight with the puck dropping just after 7 P.M.
