Fresh off their thrilling Game Seven overtime victory over the Idaho Steelheads on Wednesday night, the defending Kelly Cup Champion Allen Americans went on the road and beat the top-seeded Missouri Mavericks on Friday night to take Game One of their best of seven Conference Semifinals series.

Allen would jump out to an early lead, as Mavericks goalie Josh Robinson would fall behind his own net while playing a dumped-in puck. As Robinson scrambled back to his crease, Allen forward Greger Hanson would slide the puck past him into the open net just 70 seconds into the game. Robinson would argue that Americans forward Spencer Asuchak tripped him up, but the officials would disagree. The Mavericks would have plenty of opportunities to tie the game up, as Allen granted them four power play chances in the frame. Allen netminder Riley Gill would turn away all 11 Mavericks shots in the period, however.

Hanson’s goal would be all that Gill and the Americans needed on this night. The Americans would add an insurance goal and extend their lead to 2-0 early in the second period, as veteran forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel would bat a floating puck out of the air and past Robinson for a power play goal. The Allen defensive until and Gill put the clamps on the potent Mavericks offense for the rest of the game with Gill making the initial save and his blueliners clearing away any rebounds in front.

Gill would finish with 34 saves for the victory. The Mavericks were shutout for the first time all season, despite getting a boost up front with the return of forward Kellen Jones prior to the game. Robinson would stop 25 of 27 Allen shots in the losing effort.

Game Two is Saturday night at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Independence, Missouri. Opening faceoff is at 7:05pm CST.
