In perhaps the most impactful trade of the offseason, the Fort Wayne Komets and Idaho Steelheads have traded top echelon players from last year’s team
Headed west is defenseman James Martin, the Komets representative in last year’s all-star game in Orlando. Martin, a member of the Alaska Aces 2014 Kelly Cup championship team, played in 72 regular-season and playoff games for the Komets last season and collected 45 points. Reports out of Fort Wayne indicate that Martin had been searching for an AHL contract for the upcoming season.
Coming to Fort Wayne is Alex Belzile, who finished 17th in league scoring last season with 69 points (28G, 41A) in 63 games. Belzile, also a member of the 2014 Alaska Aces championship team, has 111 points in 119 career ECHL games. The acquisition of Belzile solidifies the right wing position for the Komets, who now have 24 players under contract for training camp.
The Komets also announced that Alex Boak has retired to begin his coaching career.
