WICHITA, KS – The Wichita Thunder added some young scoring power to the 2017-18 preseason roster on Friday.
Joining the Thunder for preseason camp is Guillaume Asselin, who won the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Player of the Year award in 2015-16.
“Guillaume came highly recommended by coaches and scouts that I know that saw him in junior and university hockey,” stated Head Coach Malcolm Cameron. “He’s a solid goal scorer and point producer that we’re excited to have in our lineup.”
The 25-year-old Asselin joins the Thunder after spending the last three and a half seasons at the University of Quebec-Trois-Rivieres (USport). A native of Quebec, the 5-foot-11, 194-pound forward racked up 27 goals and 47 points in just 28 games in 2015-16, earning him Player of the Year honors. He was also named to the CIS All-Canadian First Team that same season. In 2016-17, he helped his school claim the Universiade Bronze Medal. Overall, Asselin tallied 125 points (58g, 67a) in 80 games.
Asselin turned pro at the end of last season, spending seven games with the Brampton Beast, but only collecting two points (1G, 1A).
“I’m really excited to get things started here in Wichita,” commented Asselin. “It’s going to be my first complete pro year and I want the team to have a great playoff run. I’m an offensive guy that can score goals and I can be a good playmaker.”
Before joining the Thunder, Asselin will attend American Hockey League camp with the Belleville Senators.
The signing of Asselin brings the Thunder preseason roster to 23. You see the entire list by visiting our transaction tracker.
