Eagles Monday Rundown: Streaking in December

DENVER – The 2019-20 season has been one streak after another for the Colorado Eagles. After a four-game winning streak and three-game skid all before mid-November, the Eagles have now managed to string together another pair of crests and troughs in the win & loss columns before the Holiday Break.

On November 30, Colorado lost on the road against the Stockton Heat in overtime. The defeat began a five-game losing streak for the Eagles, salvaging a point in the Stockton loss, a road overtime loss to San Diego on December 7, and a home shootout loss to the Gulls on December 13.
Then, with five more games at home following the loss to San Diego, Colorado’s winning ways re-emerged. Hosting San Diego for one more game, Manitoba for two, and Bakersfield for two provided the Eagles with ten out of ten possible points. The five wins solidified Colorado in third place of the Pacific Division standings with 33 points — ahead of Ontario (30), San Diego (24), Bakersfield (24), and San Jose (22). For some perspective, back on American Thanksgiving (November 28), all five of these teams were separated by just three points.

FRANCHISE FIRSTS DURING WINNING RUN

The Eagles set two franchise records during their five-game home victory roll.
First, Colorado brought an offensive onslaught of 10 goals from nine different players in their 10-4 rout of Manitoba on December 18. This marks the first time the Eagles have scored double digits in the American Hockey League. The last time Colorado put a ten-spot on an opponent was back in their ECHL days, downing the Utah Grizzlies 10-3 on November 7, 2012.
Second, during the third period of Sunday night’s game against Bakersfield, the Eagles worked in short order to score three goals in 24 seconds, the fastest three-goal run in any league — CHL, ECHL, or AHL — for Colorado. The flurry of goals from Dan Ranouf (15:03), Jason Megna (15:14), and Martin Kaut (15:27) gave the Eagles a 6-3 lead late in the third and helped boost Colorado to a 7-5 victory over the Condors.

CONNAUTON HAS A POINT (STREAK) TO MAKE…

The five-game winning streak Colorado finished their homestand with due in no small part to Eagles defenseman Kevin Connauton. Dating back to December 13, Connauton has tallied 12 points (4G + 8A) in the past six games after only accruing six assists in his first 18 games played this year. His point streak is the fifth-longest active run in the AHL as of this writing. He also tied the AHL individual game high for this season of five points (2G + 3A) on Dec. 18 against Manitoba.

ENDING EAGLES EXCERPTS

Here are some stats for the Eagles thus far into the season (as of December 23)…

  • Record: 15-10-2-1, 33 pts. (third in the Pacific Division)
  • Power Play: 16 goals on 116 attempts (13.8%, 25th in AHL)
  • Penalty Kill: 21 goals allowed on 103 attempts (79.6%, 25th in AHL)
  • Players of Note: Jacob MacDonald, 5G +14A = 19P (T-8th amongst defensemen in AHL); Kevin Connauton, 4G + 13A = 17P (T-16th amongst defensemen in AHL); Hunter Miska (5-3-3, 2.58 GAA, .921 SV%); Adam Werner (10-5-0, 2.78 GAA, .914 SV%)

Colorado now holds AHL team game highs on the season in goals (10), assists (20), points (30), penalty minutes (80), major penalties (4, T-with Milwaukee), most penalty minutes by both teams (140, with Milwaukee), and goals by both teams (14, with Manitoba).
