CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Charlotte Checkers won the Macgregor Kilpatrick trophy with 110 points in the 2018-19 regular season, but dropped three-of-four contests against their Atlantic Division Final opponents, the Hershey Bears. Can the Checkers overcome the Bears in the playoffs and advance to the East Final?
Saturday was game five of the 2019 Calder Cup Finals, and meant two very different things to each team. For the Charlotte Checkers, game five was a chance to clinch their first-ever Calder Cup, while for the Chicago Wolves, a win meant they lived to play another day.
The Chicago Wolves had come back from two series deficits, 1-0 and 2-1, in order to force a game five against the Grand Rapids Griffins. Entering Sunday’s rubber match, head coach Rocky Thompson noted Chicago would only move onto the second round if it excelled at its own style of play, and did not allow Grand Rapids to get under its skin.
After seven periods of hockey Friday night, San Diego did not look back going into Saturday. The Gulls, despite a mid-game goalie change, controlled all aspects of the game, defeating Bakersfield 4-1.
May 2nd brought with it game two of the opening round match up between the Chicago Wolves, who were looking to double their series lead, and the Iowa Wild, who wanted to steal one game before returning home.
The Charlotte Checkers came into game four in Hershey one win away from a series sweep of the Hershey Bears and a trip to the Eastern Conference Final.
