PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence Bruins scored three first period goals en route to a 5-2 win over the Springfield Thunderbirds last night at the Dunkin Donuts Center.
Juho Lammikko had one of the best chances of the night for the Thunderbirds early on, when he was one-on-one with Bruins goaltender Zane McIntyre, who stoned Lammikko.
Peter Cehlarik opened the scoring for the Bruins at 11:10 into the first period came along the right side and took a wrist shot past Thunderbirds goaltender Harri Sateri to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson and Kenny Agostino would receive assists on the Cehlarik’s goal.
There would be three more goals scored in close to the final two minutes of the first period. Forsbacka Karlsson fired a shot from the left side that went past Sateri to go up 2-0. Cehlarik received an assist, and Kenny Agostino picked up his second assist of the night.
The Thunderbirds got on the board 37 seconds later when Ed Wittchow took a shot from a weird angle on the left side that went off McIntyre’s leg and into the net. Alexandre Grenier and Blaine Byron received an assist on Wittchow’s goal.
The Bruins extended their lead with 50 seconds left in the opening period as Jordan Szwarz sent a pass to Ryan Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald went down the right side and took a one-timer to go up 3-1.
The Bruins extended their lead by three with 3:58 remaining in the second period as Tommy Cross took a one-timer on the power play and went by Sateri to go up 4-1. Danton Heinen would receive an assist as well as Jordan Szwarz would receive his second assist of the night.
The Bruins extended their lead by four 45 seconds into the third period when Zach Senyshyn scored to make it 5-1.
The Thunderbirds finally put an end to the Bruins scoring run close to two minutes later when Henrik Haapala scored his first American Hockey League goal when he deposited a pass from Grenier. Lammikko also received an assist.
Sateri finished with 26 saves in the loss for the Thunderbirds, and Zane McIntyre finished with 29 saves in the win for the Bruins.
These two teams will meet again Friday night at the Dunkin Donuts Center with the game beginning at 7:00 p.m.
