The Brampton Beast announced the hiring of Toronto native and former Kalamazoo Wings Assistant Coach Colin Chaulk as the Beast’s Head Coach for the 2015-2016 ECHL season.

The leadership, veteran experience, and determination to win are all part of what made Chaulk such an attractive candidate for the Beast head coaching position.

“What we find exceptional about Colin is the level of leadership that he brings to the Brampton Beast,” said team President and General Manager Cary Kaplan. “It is unheard of for a player in the ECHL to have been a captain for 14 years, never mind the fact that Colin led his team to an unprecedented five championships in that span. On behalf of the Rosen family and our entire organization, we feel confident that we have hired the best person possible for this position.”

After officially hanging up his skates and retiring as a player, Chaulk has spent the past two seasons as assistant coach of the Kalamazoo Wings under the guidance of head coach Nick Bootland. Both times his team has made the playoffs.

While Chaulk is now behind the bench instead of sitting on it, the pedigree for success is the same as when he was a player, and the promotion to a head-coaching gig did not come as a surprise to his former mentor.

“It’s definitely not shocking,” said Bootland of the news. “I know that he is going to be a very good head coach. He has a great grasp for the game, is an unbelievably committed individual and someone who has made our organization better for the last two years.”

For Chaulk, the next step in his coaching career means a return back to the Greater Toronto Area, where both Colin and his wife Jillian are from. It will also be an exciting change for Chaulk’s two daughters, Ava and Caprie, who have recently begun playing hockey themselves.

“It’s a major move, especially for my family, and we’re very excited,” said Chaulk. “For an opportunity like this to coach near my home, in the hockey mecca where everyone eats, sleeps and breathes hockey, it’s an unbelievable opportunity. I’ve been waiting a long time for this and I cant wait to get started.”
