Bears Sign Familiar Face in Herbert

HERSHEY, Pa. – The Hershey Bears announced the team has signed forward Caleb Herbert to an AHL contract for the 2020-21 season.

Herbert, 28, previously skated with the team for parts of three seasons from 2014-2016, playing in 45 total games and scoring seven points (two goals, five assists) during that time. Herbert played the majority of those two seasons with the South Carolina Stingrays from 2014-2016, helping the team reach the Kelly Cup Finals in 2015 and returning to the Conference Finals in 2016, where the team unfortunately lost in seven games both times.

Herbert bounced around a little bit in the years since departing the Washington organization, finding some success with the Texas Stars in 2016-17 and playing for three different AHL clubs in 2017-18 (Hartford, San Jose, and Utica). He also split time between the Utah Grizzlies and Colorado Eagles in 2018-19. Herbert played in Austria in 2019-20 for Innsbruck HC before signing to return to the Bears.

Herbert will be pushing for a spot with Hershey this season on a roster that’s becoming increasingly more competitive as the team collects more AHL signings. Herbert dominated at the ECHL level in each of his stops. Dating back to his days with the Stingrays, he had three goals and 11 assists in 27 postseason games in 2015 (all but one series went seven games for the Stingrays that playoff year) and ten goals and six assists in 19 playoff games the following spring. In his most recent stops, he had 52 points (24 goals, 28 assists) with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits in 2017-18 and 71 points (32 goals, 39 assists) in 60 games with the Grizzlies in 2018-19. If he does spend time with the Stingrays again in 2020-21, he’ll certainly be a huge addition to a team with big aspirations after a great season was cut short.

Herbert was drafted in the fifth round, 142nd overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals. He was named to the 2019 ECHL All-Star Game and earned All-ECHL First Team honors. Playing overseas in Austria, he led Innsbruck HC with 43 points (16 goals, 27 assists).
