INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The ECHL and the Indy Fuel, announced on Thursday that NHL legend Wayne Gretzky will be part of the 2018 CCM/ECHL All-Star Classic, taking place at Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Monday, January 15, 2018.
The NHL legend will return to Indianapolis, the city where he started his professional career. Gretzky began his career with the WHA’s Indianapolis Racers before being sold to the Edmonton Oilers with Eddie Mio & Peter Driscoll for reportedly $700,000 or $850,000. The former Racer went on to be the NHL’s all-time leading scorer.
“We are thrilled to have the one-and-only Wayne Gretzky be part of the 2018 CCM/ECHL All-Star Classic,” Fuel CEO Sean Hallet said in a league release. “Who better to help celebrate pro hockey in Indianapolis than the greatest player to ever lace up a pair of skates? With Wayne involved, this event will be something our entire community can be excited for – not just the hockey fans.”
“It is an honor to be involved with the ECHL All-Star Classic,” Gretzky said in the league release. “I am looking forward to returning to Indianapolis to join the celebration in January.”
In June 1978, Gretzky was signed to a 7-year personal services contract worth $1.75 million by the Indianapolis Racers. “The Great One” played eight games for the Racers, tallying six points (3g, 3a). A four-time Stanley Cup winner, Gretzky won a total of nine Hart Trophies and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999 and saw his iconic No. 99 retired throughout the entire NHL before the All-Star Game in 2000.
