SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Springfield Thunderbirds will prepare for another three games in three nights. The Thunderbirds swept the weekend last weekend and are looking to gain more momentum. Every point counts for the Thunderbirds as they are 20 points behind the Providence Bruins for the fourth and final playoff spot in the American Hockey League Atlantic Division. They are 14 points behind the Hershey Bears for fifth place in the division.
The weekend will kickoff when the Lehigh Valley Phantoms come to the MassMutual Center for the second time this season. The Phantoms came back from three goals down in the third period to beat Springfield 5-4 back on January 16th. The Thunderbirds are looking for their first win against the Phantoms during the 2016-17 campaign. They dropped two decisions in Allentown and one in Springfield. The puck will drop this Friday night at the MassMutual Center at 7:05 P.M.
The I-91 rivals will meet for the third weekend in a row. The Thunderbirds and the Wolf Pack met on Sunday at the XL Center in Hartford. The Thunderbirds took the last round in the series with a 4-2 victory. Thunderbirds goaltender Mike McKenna earned his 200th victory in the AHL becoming the 15th goaltender to join that list.
The Wolf Pack won back on February 10th in a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat for the Thunderbirds. The puck will drop in this matchup Saturday night at the MassMutual Center at 7:05 P.M.
The Thunderbirds will round out the weekend with a trip to the Dunkin Donuts Center to take on the Providence Bruins for a Sunday matinee affair. The Thunderbirds have had their hands full this year with the Bruins. The Bruins won the last meeting 4-1 in Providence back on February 12th.
