NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) Jeff Jakaitis’ ECHL-record shutout streak ended after four games, but the South Carolina Stingrays won their 21st straight with a 5-4 shootout victory over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night.
Jakaitis’ streak lasted 321 minutes, 46 seconds, and was stopped on Steven Hodges’ goal just 2:14 into the first period. Jakaitis holds the minor professional hockey record and fell 10:16 shy of the modern-era pro hockey mark held by Brian Boucher, who set the record with the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes in 2003-04.
Still, Jakaitis won his 13th straight game, tying Roanoke’s Daniel Berthiaume, who originally set the ECHL mark during the 1994-95 season.
The game marked just the second time during its winning streak that South Carolina went beyond regulation, and the first time it won in a shootout during the span. The Stingrays began their streak with a 7-1 win at Greenville on Feb. 7.
