Welcome to the final off day of the 2016-17 ECHL regular season! After today, 27 teams will begin a furious sprint to the finish line and at the end of Sunday, 16 teams will continue their season, while 9 more will bid adieu.

We did get some clarity on the playoff picture Wednesday night, with the race for the 4-seed in the mountain division down to two teams, but no additional entrants to the playoff field.

Let’s get into our breakdowns:

Eastern Conference:

NORTH:

  • Just because the field of four for the division semis are set, does not mean the seeding and matchups are.
    • Adirondack’s magic number for clinching the division title is 2. They will clinch the division title with a win or an OT/SO loss Friday night.
    • Brampton’s magic number for clinching home-ice in the first round is 3. They will clinch home-ice with a win over Manchester and a loss by Reading Friday night.
    • Reading’s magic number for clinching the third seed is 3.

SOUTH:

  • The Everblades have clinched the South Division and top seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs
  • Greenville’s magic number for clinching the #2 seed and will clinch home-ice in the opening round with their next standings point.
  • South Carolina & Orlando’s magic numbers for clinching a playoff berth are at 1 each. They will get in with wins, OT/SO losses or any loss by Cincinnati the rest of the way.
  • Positions 2-5 in the South are separated by seven points. Here is a look at the standings, ROW wins, goal differential, the games remaining and next games for the teams involved:
TEAM RECORD ROW GOAL DIFF GAMES REMAINING UP NEXT
x-2 Greenville Swamp Rabbits 39-25-5-1 (84 pts) 37 +2 2 (1H, 1A) Hm v. CIN Fri
3 South Carolina Stingrays 38-28-3-1 (80 pts) 37 +14 2 (2H, 0A) Hm v. ATL Fri
4 Orlando Solar Bears 35-25-7-3 (80 pts) 32 +10 2 (1H, 1A) Hm v. FLA Fri
5 Cincinnati Cyclones 36-29-4-1 (77 pts) 32 -7 2 (0H, 2A) @GVL Sat
  • Norfolk, Elmira, and Atlanta have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Western Conference:

  • Colorado, Allen, Toledo, Fort Wayne, Quad City, Kalamazoo, and Idaho have all clinched playoff berths.
  • Wichita, Tulsa, Indy, Rapid City and Missouri have been eliminated from playoff contention

CENTRAL:

  • Toledo clinched the Central division Saturday night by virtue of a shootout loss.
  • Fort Wayne will be the 2-seed in the divisional playoffs, Quad City will be the 3-seed and Kalamazoo the 4-seed. See the bracket below for playoff matchups.

MOUNTAIN:

  • Allen’s magic number for clinching the division is 1. They will clinch with a win, OT/SO loss to Tulsa or a regulation loss by Colorado against Rapid City.
  • The team that doesn’t win the division (Colorado or Allen) will be the 2-seed.

Here is a look at the top of the Mountain Division standings; the games remaining, upcoming schedule & the team’s ROW (non-shootout wins) and goal differential totals (first two ECHL tiebreakers):

TEAM RECORD ROW GOAL DIFF GAMES LEFT UP NEXT
1 Allen Americans 47-17-4-2 (100 pts) 45 +88 2 (0H, 2A) @TUL Fri
2 Colorado Eagles 46-19-2-3 (97 pts) 44 +59 2 (0H, 2A) @RC Fri
  • Idaho has locked in the 3-seed
  • Utah now occupies the fourth and final playoff position in the Mountain division. They have a three-point lead on Alaska for the final playoff spot and their magic number for clinching a playoff berth is 2.
  • Alaska would need to win out & have Utah lose out in regulation for them to make the playoffs in their final season.

Here is a look at the standings, the games remaining, upcoming schedule & the team’s ROW (non-shootout wins) and goal differential totals (first two ECHL tiebreakers):

TEAM RECORD ROW GOAL DIFF GAMES LEFT UP NEXT
4 Utah Grizzlies 35-28-5-2 (77 pts) 32 -16 2 (2H, 0A) Hm v. MIZ Fri
5 Alaska Aces 32-28-3-7 (74 pts) 31 -7 2 (2H, 0A) Hm v. IDA Fri

Here is how the bracket shakes out if the playoffs started today:

Teams who have clinched berths are represented by an “X” next to their seeding.
“Y” represents a division champion
“Z” represents a conference regular season champion:

The Race for the Brabham Cup:

The race for the Brabham Cup is as tight as we head into the final weekend. Here are the standings at the top of the league as we head into action Friday night:

TEAM RECORD ROW GOAL DIFF GAMES REMAINING UP NEXT
Toledo Walleye 49-17-2-2 (102 pts) 46 +100 2 (1H, 1A) @Indy Fri
Allen Americans 47-17-4-2 (100 pts) 45 +88 2 (0H, 2A) @TUL Fri

The importance of winning the Brabham Cup is that it gives the winner home-ice advantage throughout every round of the playoffs for as long as they are in.

  1. I don’t think you have all the numbers right. “Magic number” means the total number of points won by a team, or lost by the team below them, which ensures they can’t be caught in the standings.

If Adirondack gets only one more point, and Brampton wins both remaining games they will be tied with 90 points each. Brampton would have one more win than Adirondack in that scenario and therefore would be the division champ. Adirondack’s magic number is 2

Also Brampton needs both a regulation win and a Reading loss (regulation or OT) to clinch second, that means their magic number is 3, not 2.
